Starting the program On the Main Menu, click the Security tab then click: Set Database Protection- BS404
The initial screen BS404S01 looks like this: Screenshot Dont be put off by the long list of entries. Ive
created numerous databases on hard disc and external drives for test purposes when developing the system. Your list will probably have your Live database and a
few backups
In this section
About the program This program allows you to make
settings which will help protect your databases against accidental loss when using programs which overwrite (or can overwrite) an existing database.
An
existing database can be overwritten with both the Backup programs (BS481 or BS491) the Restore program (BS493) and the
Create New Database program (BS426)
The Database
Protection flag is written to a field in the actual database. Thus, if the database is on a removable disk, the setting is transportable between
computers.
Referring to the Screenshot there are three types of Data Protection messages
- Protected
This setting is recommended for any database containing live data
- Not Protected
This setting is recommended for Backups which are overwritten periodically
- Not tested
Since the protection flag is read from the actual database, the Not Tested
message will appear if the database can not be opened for any reason. Examples:
- the device containing the database is not connected to the computer
- the network server containing the database is not switched on
- the database is empty (e.g. a new Data Location Record, not used as yet for a Backup )
More info: Bank Genie sets the Data Protection to a default value as follows:
- The database created in a Backup (using BS481 or BS491) is set to NOT Protected
- Options are offered when you use the program Create new database - BS426
The default is Protected, but you can change the setting before clicking the button to create the new database
These settings can be changed at any time using this program (BS404)
Setting Data Protection for a database Click to select the database in the initial screen Screenshot
- If the current status is NOT Protected click the Set Protection ON to enable protection
- If the current status is Protected click the Set Protection OFF to remove protection
- If the current status is NOT Tested
you will not be permitted to set Protection
(the device containing the database must be connected)
