Tags In this section
What are Tags Tags provide an additional way of
classifying transactions.
The use is best illustrated by an example: You run an amateur dramatic group and need to make annual accounts. Your main
account is taken care of by the category structure and profit and loss grouping, allowing you to put income (tickets, sale of drinks and food) on one side and
expenditure (hire of halls, utility costs, purchase of food) on the other.
However for internal use you want to know how each show did. This could be done
by having lots of subcategories but would become cumbersome. Instead you can tag each transaction for a particular show by a unique tag for that show (for
example, guysanddolls). Then in Transaction Analyser (BS408) Bank Genie can be asked to produce a report for a particular date range for one (or more) tags and produce an income and expenditure list just for that tag, enabling you to see how that show did.
More than one tag can be assigned to a transaction so if you wanted to be able also to get a report by the type of show you could for example tag each transaction with both the name of the show and the type, such as tag=
guysanddolls tag=musical
tag=hamlet tag=play
This ability to index a transaction in more than one way cannot be done using Categories/subcategories
Examples of Tags
- Paying a Credit Card from your Current account
- Withdrawing money from one (or more) account and lodging in another
How to create and use Tags Tags can be created
and maintained using the program Tags - BS430 Tags can also be created on the fly as you add or edit transactions using the
program Manage Transactions BS421 or when you edit transactions using the program Transaction Analyser BS408
How to extract reports based on Tags Use the program Transaction Analyser BS408 for all reports, including Tags.
How to delete Tags Tags can only be deleted by using the program Tags BS430 When you edit a tag in that
program, a count of the number of transactions linked to that Tag are displayed. If you choose to delete a Tag, any reference to the deleted Tag will be removed
from those transactions.
