Starting the program
On the Main Menu, click the Investments tab then click Investments -
BS431 Screen BS431S01 appears
In this section:
About Investment Accounts An Investment account must be created if you
wish to record Investment records even if you only wish to record simple trading you do without creating an actual account with a Broker. Investment accounts
differ from all other account types in Bank Genie in that you must use the program Investments-BS431
to add (investment) transactions. Investment accounts do NOT appear in the list of accounts in the program Manage Transactions BS421.
Adding an Investment Accounts
You can add Investment accounts:-
- a) using the program Bank Accounts - BS403 - the same program you use to add all other Bank Accounts to Bank Genie.
In that program, when you get to screen
BS403S02 and select Account Type: Investment Account, the screen closes and the special screen BS403S03 appears. -or-
- b) You may find it easier to add new accounts in the Investments program “on the fly”.
In screen BS431S01, click the Add button and click Add an
account. Again, as in a) , Screen BS403S03 appears
To link, or not to Link When adding an Investment account in Screen
BS403S03 you have a very important decision to make - do I need to link my Investment Account to a Cash Account?
If you have an account with a broker, then
the answer is Yes. The linked Cash account will reflect the cash balance held by your broker.
A Linked account MUST have an account type Cash:-
- before it can be linked to an Investment account in screen BS403S03.
- before it can be used in the Investments program
(for Buy and Sell transactions - as opposed to BuyX and SellX)
In Bank Genie, a Linked Current account can be accessed exactly the same as a “normal” account e.g. a Current account” in that you can add
transactions to it using the program Manage Transactions BS421.
Examples on how a Linked Cash Account is used
- Add a transaction in BS421 to reflect money sent to your Broker (e.g. to buy shares).
This is normally recorded as a Transfer - e.g. from a Current
account - to the Linked Cash account - NOT to the Investment account.
- Use the Buy (NOT BuyX) action in the Investment program to record an investment buy transaction.
Bank Genie shows this as a debit from the Linked Cash
Account
- Use the Sell (NOT SellX) action in the Investment program to record an investment sell transaction.
Bank Genie shows this as a credit made to the Linked
Cash Account
- Add a transaction in BS421 to reflect money received (withdrawn) from the account you have with your Broker (e.g. as a result of the sell transaction
above).
This is normally recorded as a Transfer - e.g. from the Linked Cash account to a Current account.
